Energy conservation is an indispensable part of a responsible attitude toward the environment for ecological reasons. Due to the currently high energy prices, conserving energy is also an economic necessity.
Where can you conserve energy?
Heating - General | Checklist | Course of Action | | Is the temperature in the room too high? | Set the thermostat valve to a lower level | | Is heating unnecessary? | Set to frost protection mode, lock valve (if possible) | | Are additional electric space heaters in use? | Remove electric space heaters | Radiators | Checklist | Course of Action | | Are there radiators near exterior doors? | Set to frost protection mode, lock valve (if possible) | | Are radiators blocked by furniture or covered by a decorative casing? | Change position of furniture, remove casing if possible | | Are there still old radiator valves or are the thermostat valves broken? | Order new parts (adjustable, lockable; meets energy conservation regulations) | | Are all thermostat valves set to 3 or less in rooms and 1-2 in corridors? | Set to lower level; lock if possible. If this is not enough, try to find out the cause (fault in heating network, draft, etc.) | | Is there air in the radiators? | Have the radiators de-aerated by TGM employees | Ventilation | Checklist | Course of Action | | Are windows tilted open for extended periods? | Close windows and ventilate by opening them entirely for a short period | | Are windows in unused rooms open? | Close them and check again periodically | | Are the doors often open? | Close doors, remove doorstop if necessary | Electronic Appliances / Lighting | Checklist | Course of Action | | Are electronic appliances which are not in use running on stand-by mode? | Turn off appliances, pull plugs or procure multiple socket outlet with switch and set to “off” | | Are standard light bulbs in use? | Install energy-saving lamps (except in rooms which are not used often such as storage rooms) | | Are the lights on in rooms which are not being used? | Turn off lights and consider further measures. Order motion detector if necessary (restrooms, corridors) | | Do lights in group rooms have multiple switches (window/wall side)? | Mark light switch | | Are lights on in rooms in which there is sufficient sunlight? | Turn off lights | | Are reflectors or casing of lights soiled or dusty? | Clean reflectors or casing | | Are 38mm fluorescent lights still in use? | Order 26 mm lights immediately from TGM | | Are there curtains, jalousies, etc.? | Close them at night in the winter (extra insulation) | | Are curtains, blinds, jalousies closed and the lights on? | Open them if sunlight is not too blinding; replace defective jalousies | | What color are the rooms (walls, ceiling, floor)? | Use bright colors when restoration is necessary | | Is exterior lighting in use when not needed? | Arrange new switch-off times with TGM; install motion detector if necessary | Cold Water Consumption | Checklist | Course of Action | | Are water-saving faucets installed? | Have flow-rate limiting devices and/or energy-saving shower heads installed | | Do faucets drip? | Have faucet repaired by TGM; 1 drop per hour amounts to approx. 6000 liters per year, for hot water also approx. 280 kWh of heat loss | | Do toilets run? | Have toilet repaired by TGM. Running toilets waste 20 liters of water per hour or 180 m3 | | Is tap water used to water plants and grass outdoors? | Water outdoor green spaces from faucet with separate meter (no sewage fee); water at night if possible in order to minimize evaporation; check whether it is possible to use ground water or rain water. | | Does the water meter run when no water is being used? (Check after closing time or compare meter after closing and before opening) | Have TGM check water pipes for a possible leak. | Air Conditioned Rooms | Checklist | Course of Action | | Are windows or doors open? | Please keep them closed while air conditioner is running. | | What temperature is the air conditioner set to? | Only cool rooms as much as required; never cool them too much. | | Is it necessary to run the air conditioner 24 hours a day? | If not, turn off air conditioner after closing time or, if more effective, set to a higher temperature. | | Does an area get too cold or is the thermostat broken? | Please contact TGM immediately! | Simple and Effective | Checklist | | Turn off light when you leave your office. This saves energy even if you plan to come back shortly | | Turn off PC (including monitor/printer) in the evening and remove it from the power supply completely using a multiple socket outlet with switch (35% of the energy consumption in offices is caused by PCs) | | Turn off heater when windows are open | | Set heater to 2 or less in evening | |
